The Library
December 14th, 2009 was my last day to work in the university library. I began when I was a freshman, and now, 3 1/2 years later, I am a senior who will graduate soon. I will look back on my job in the library as one of the highlights of my college experience...odd, I know. :) I loved the quiet, orderliness of the library, and the way the old books smelled in the restoration room. No matter how bad my day might have been, I could always sign in for my shift at the library and escape upstairs into the special kind of solitude that only thousands of books could provide. After 3 1/2 years, I knew each section and could spot a book out of place from across the room (a tidy person's dream come true:). The history section and children's room were always my favorites; it felt like a treasure hunt because there were so many good books just waiting to be discovered. "Libraries are reservoirs of strength, grace and wit, reminders of order, calm and continuity, lakes of mental energy, neither warm nor cold, light nor dark...In any library in the world, I am at home, unselfconscious, still and absorbed." ~Germaine Greer"We may sit in our library and yet be in all quarters of the earth." ~John Lubbock"To those with ears to hear, libraries are really very noisy places. On their shelves we hear the captured voices of the centuries-old conversation that makes up our civilization." ~Timothy Healy
