Farewell, Yellowstone

September 24th, 2012
After visiting the Grand Tetons, we drove back through Yellowstone on our way to Cody, Wyoming.
Aftermath of a forest fire.
We came upon this injured bison on the side of the road. His shoulder was torn and the flesh was hanging. The poor creature looked terribly injured and sick.
A few bison in the distance seemed to be following their injured comrade.
Shelby and I were so busy watching the injured bison, we didn't notice the three others advancing up the hillside.

The car window was rolled down and I turned to see this beast staring in my face just a few feet away. I screamed and tried to roll up the window, but managed to hit every other button first. Unbeknownst to me, Shelby was filming the entire spectacle. We now have video of me shrieking and telling the bison that he had better not attack my car because it wasn't paid for yet.

The bison in the lead gave me the stink eye and stared until I backed the car up and got out of his way.

The herd then crossed the road, and my car survived with nary a scratch. :)
Yellowstone Lake
As we approached Yellowstone's exit, Shelby was listing all the wildlife she had seen. Just as she was stating how disappointed she was that she had not seen a moose, I spotted two moose up ahead. I told her to get her camera ready because her moose dream was about to be fulfilled. :) Shelby squealed with delight when we drove along side the cow and her calf.
Moose are such stately, noble looking creatures.
We snapped several pictures, then exited the park. Within five minutes, I almost hit a herd of bighorn sheep crossing the road because we were still so excited about the moose encounter. :)
