What On Earth Are You Doing?

The following passages are from the book, What On Earth Are You Doing?, by Michael Griffiths.

"To respond to the missionary God is not a restricting call to a dull limited life, but a call to adventure, to agony and ecstasy, to lead a far fuller and more fulfilling life than we could have ever devised for ourselves." p. 14

"His love leads him to extreme lengths, 'even death on a cross'. He is ready to be humiliated, publicly scoffed at, stripped of clothes, torn from friends and family--all to save us. He is a Saviour who goes to passionate extremes. This is the value he sets on human beings--they are so precious to him that he will give up all for them. 'I am sending you' means that we too must be ready to sacrifice everything in order to save human beings." p. 19

"We are not to stay in our social, ethnic, and religious ghettos, but to venture boldly in the power of the Spirit to stay with tanners, hitch-hike with Ethiopians, dance for joy with beggars, feast with tax collectors, embrace Samaritans as brothers and to be liberated from the fetters of our social and ethnic reserve by the missionary Christ." p. 20

"...God, then calls us to wildness and risk and humility and love. We have quite deliberately started with God. If you start with man you start worrying about your future, your profession, your bank balance, your children, and a hundred and one reasons for doing nothing. But, if you start with theology--and with God, then it all looks quite different. The perspective is right. If he cares for mankind and puts such a value on them, and if he loves me like this, then I must go out and love them too. Look at God first, then you can see human beings properly, with new eyes." p. 21

I am encouraged and blessed by the comments you've shared from this book. These comments remind me of "Mother" Theresa's views on love...though I cannot agree with her views on salvation, I do agree with her perspective on what constitutes true love. I enjoy your blog...looking forward to the next!
